Eleven Minutes
A two-person thriller scene, written for Sides. About 1 min.
An interview room and an alibi with eleven minutes missing.
- Detective Alvarez
- 40s. Patient, in control
- Kai
- 20s. Has an alibi with a hole in it
An interview room. Alvarez slides a coffee across. Kai doesn’t touch it.
- Detective Alvarez
You were at your sister’s from eight until midnight.
- Kai
I already told the other guy.
- Detective Alvarez
I know. I’m slow. Humor me.
- Kai
Eight until midnight. We watched a movie. She fell asleep on the couch.
- Detective Alvarez
What movie?
- Kai
Something with boats. I wasn’t really watching.
- Detective Alvarez
What were you doing?
- Kai
My phone.
- Detective Alvarez
Your phone. See, that’s the thing. Your phone was at your sister’s. Your car wasn’t.
- Kai
My car was in her driveway.
- Detective Alvarez
For most of the night. The neighbor’s camera has it leaving at ten forty-one. Back at ten fifty-two.
- Kai
I went for cigarettes.
- Detective Alvarez
Eleven minutes. The nearest gas station is nine minutes each way.
- Kai
Then I drove fast.
- Detective Alvarez
You didn’t buy cigarettes, Kai. We checked.
Silence.
- Kai
Am I under arrest?
- Detective Alvarez
Not yet. Right now you’re a guy with eleven missing minutes and a story about boats. Tell me where you went, and maybe you’re just a guy.
- Kai
If I tell you, it’s not me you’ll be looking for.
- Detective Alvarez
Then start talking before I stop believing that.
