The Speech

A dramedy monologue, written for Sides. About 1 min.

Running for student council president, and the speech goes off script.

Riley
14 to 18. Running for president
  1. Hi. I’m Riley, I’m running for president, and I had a speech. It was really good. My mom helped. It had a joke about the vending machines.

  2. The vending machines are still broken, by the way. That was the joke.

  3. But I was sitting back there listening to everyone, and every speech was about what they’d change. Longer lunch. Better dances. And those are fine. I want those too.

  4. But I keep thinking about the girl who eats lunch in the library because she doesn’t have anywhere to sit. You don’t know who she is. That’s the point. Nobody does.

  5. I don’t know how to fix that with a policy. I don’t think you can vote it away. But I think if the president of this school sat somewhere different every day, people would notice. And then maybe other people would.

  6. That’s my platform. I’ll sit with you. Whoever you are.

  7. Also, vote for me, and I will fix the vending machines. That part I can actually do. My uncle knows a guy.
