- Claire
- 30s to 50s. Was there every weekend
- Paul
- 30s to 50s. Sent money, stayed away
- Lawyer
- 40s to 60s. Reading the letter as asked
- Lawyer
Your mother left the house to both of you, jointly.
- Claire
Jointly.
- Paul
That’s fine.
- Claire
It is not fine. You haven’t been in that house in nine years.
- Paul
I sent money every month.
- Claire
You sent money. I sent myself. Every weekend.
- Lawyer
There’s also a letter. She asked that I read it with you both here.
- Paul
Go ahead.
- Lawyer
“Claire. Paul. I know you’re fighting. Stop it.”
- Claire
That’s her.
- Lawyer
“Claire, you were there. I know what that cost you. Paul, you weren’t, and I know what that cost you too.”
- Paul
She didn’t know anything about what it cost me.
- Lawyer
“Paul, I knew. I was your mother. I knew you couldn’t look at me sick.”
- Paul
Keep going.
- Lawyer
“Sell the house. Split it evenly. Then have dinner. Once a month, for one year. That’s the only thing I’m asking.”
- Claire
She can’t make us do that.
- Lawyer
No. She can’t. She also left a reservation. First Friday of next month. It’s prepaid.
- Paul
She prepaid it?
- Claire
Of course she did. She knew you’d make me pay.
