- Jo
- 40s. HR, trained by Theo
- Theo
- 50s. Twenty-two years at the company
A glass-walled office. Jo has a folder. Theo walks in already knowing.
- Theo
They gave it to you.
- Jo
Sit down, Theo.
- Theo
I trained you in that chair. The lumbar setting’s on four. It sticks.
- Jo
I know. I’m not here to talk about the chair.
- Theo
How many?
- Jo
I can’t tell you that.
- Theo
More than me.
- Jo
More than you.
- Theo
Twenty-two years.
- Jo
I know exactly how many years. I looked it up before I came in. I wanted to say it right.
- Theo
So say it right.
- Jo
Your position is being eliminated, effective Friday. The package is in the folder. It’s better than most. I fought for it.
- Theo
You fought for it.
- Jo
I did.
- Theo
You’d have been good at this job if it were a different job.
- Jo
That’s not fair.
- Theo
No. It isn’t. Four. It sticks. Don’t let them tell you to replace it.
