Last Call
A two-person romance scene, written for Sides. About 1 min.
A bartender and a regular, the last night before the bar closes for good.
- Sam
- 30s to 40s. The bartender
- Ellie
- 30s to 40s. Six years on the same stool
- Sam
Last call. For real this time.
- Ellie
You say that every night.
- Sam
Tonight it’s true. Lease is up. Tomorrow this is a phone store.
- Ellie
No.
- Sam
Yes. They’re keeping the sign. Calling it “Sam’s Mobile.”
- Ellie
That’s horrible.
- Sam
That’s what I said. Then they told me what they were paying for the sign.
- Ellie
Six years I’ve sat on this stool.
- Sam
I know. I keep it open for you. People try to take it. I tell them it’s broken.
- Ellie
It’s not broken.
- Sam
I know.
- Ellie
Where will you go?
- Sam
Don’t know yet. Somewhere with a stool. What about you? Where will you go at eleven o’clock on a Tuesday?
- Ellie
Home, I guess. Like a normal person.
- Sam
You’d hate that.
- Ellie
I would hate that. Sam. Can I ask you something I’ve wanted to ask for about five years?
- Sam
You can ask me anything. The bar’s closed. Nobody’s working.
- Ellie
Would you want to get dinner? Somewhere you’re not on the other side of the counter?
- Sam
I’ve had a reservation in my phone for five years. I just kept moving it.
